PERIODIC VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The school year is full of events that are enhanced by parental involvement. This page is put together with the intention of giving parents an idea of ways to be involved. Contacts are provided when the administration would like a call list. For everything else, requests will be posted prior to the event.
Community Day
On September 26, 2009 the Class of 2010 worked with parents and administrators to launch the first ever Long Trail School Community Day. The Middle School Soccer Tournament filled our fields, while the lawn around the school hosted a bouncy house, cotton candy, tie-dye-your-own-shirt area, spin art, button making, a tag sale, a bake sale, bowl making, and much more.
This year’s event was a great success! If you are interested in helping out in the future, contact Patti Alexander at palexander@longtrailschool.org
Chaperones for School Trips and Field Trips
If you are one of those hard to find and highly valued individuals who yearn to get on a school bus and spend the day out in the world with middle and/or upper schoolers, please do not keep this information to yourself.
We’ll let you know when we have openings for chaperones.
Hospitality to LTS Guests
During the course of the school year LTS may host guests such as authors, artists, and performers. We like to make sure greeters are available to welcome our visitors. If visitors travel a long distance we like to provide a meal. Requests will be shared as opportunities present themselves!
Student Performances
LTStudent Performances include choral, instrumental and drama events. These are venues which depend on parental participation. We need parents to be with students when they are backstage, greeters, and other helpers. When notice goes out to parents asking for help, please RSVP as soon as you can, as we depend on you for your help.
Empty Bowls
Each spring the Long Trail School community comes together to host an Empty Bowls event, which raises funds for food kitchens and other local charities. We hope you will join in by signing up for one of our “bowling” events, helping out on day of the event. or attending the the Empty Bowls evening. This events attract residents from many towns around Dorset, who come for a a dinner of soup and bread, and who walk away with a handmade bowl made by someone in our community.
Here are links for suggestions on How to Make a Bowl for Empty Bowls, and How to Glaze your bowl.
Spelling Bee and Odyssey of the Mind
Both the Spelling Bee Club activity and the Odyssey of the Mind activity start and end during a segment of the school year. Both of these activities will happen at LTS only when a volunteer parent comes forward to coach a team. Contact palexander@longtrailschool.org for more information.
Spelling Bee Club
Each autumn middle schoolers at LTS have the opportunity to train (ie memorize the spelling of about 3000 words), then compete in a state-wide spelling bee. This activity entirely depends on there being a parent, who comes forward before mid-October, to run the activity. If you are interested in this check out www.spellingbee.com.
Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is a competition of creative team thinking within strict parameters. Students generally prepare for this state wide competition for several months, beginning in the late fall. About a hundred schools gather in Vermont in late winter to present student generated skits, complete with costumes, sets and script.
